Off-Season Cross Training
By: Sarah Jarvis, Elite Triathlete
Some people believe that there is no such thing as an off-season in triathlon. I disagree. I love my off-season! It might not be very long and is still filled with plenty of activity but it is different from my regular training routine. Whereas in training and racing season the focus is on building speed, strength, and endurance, the off-season is all about having fun. My kind of fun includes nature, friends, adventure, and making use of our neglected non-triathlon gear.
I am a big fan of cross-training, especially during the off-season. It is a great way to stay fit and healthy while taking a mental and physical break from triathlon specific training. Cross-training enables me to feel rejuvenated, injury-free, and in decent shape by the time training season rolls around.
During this past off-season I had a great time exploring new trails on my mountain bike, snowshoeing in the mountains, and skate skiing with my husband. These sports are excellent cross-training options. One of the highlights has been a snowshoe trip up Hobble Creek Canyon with six good friends and fellow athletes. We marched through snow that was up to our knees in 10 degree cold for almost 6 hours and had a fantastic time. We enjoyed great conversations, beautiful scenery, and flawless teamwork.
Off-season activities definitely don’t need to be long or involved. In addition to outdoor sports, I also try to take advantage of the many classes offered at the gym and focus more on core strength and flexibility. I also still swim, run and bike but with a different mindset. Rather than going out there and making every minute count, I make a point of enjoying every minute. If it is not enjoyable, I stop and go home. The off-season is a great time to workout with friends and family, and regain the enthusiasm that will carry us through the racing season.
