Idaho is known for snow-capped mountain ranges, vast lakes, steep canyons, majestic waterfalls, and its vast number of rivers flowing with white water rapids. It also happens to have one of the most well organized races in the country: the Pocatello Marathon. This is one race you should consider adding to your early fall calendar. As one participant from Oregon states “Pocatello certainly knows how to treat runners right! Superbly organized, a tremendous number of friendly volunteers, a fast course, and the best post-race festivities around make this an outstanding event.” The race was voted “Best Schwag” by Runner’s World in 2006. Post-race food includes much more than the standard banana and bagel. Runners are greeted with pulled pork sandwiches and baked potatoes at the finish line. The first half of this course is very fast, dropping about 1400 feet in elevation. The second half is relatively flat, dropping only about 150 feet. Runners enjoy views of the beautiful mountains and valleys of southern Idaho. Sign up as soon as possible for 2011, because this unusually well organized race will soon sell-out.
