CompuTrainer Pro

By Bart Preston & Jameson King

As a life-long resident of Utah, I know that the winters are not favorable to bike training for a spring Ironman. So, I purchased a CompuTrainer Pro to train for the 2010 Ironman St. George. Besides providing a safer workout than riding outside, system offers many benefits.

The CompuTrainer differs from a traditional bike trainer because it has a load generator that generates a wattage using a computer or control panel. When connected to a computer, the CompuTrainer can increase or decrease the load, simulating real riding conditions, while simultaneously tracking watts (power) generated, speed, cadence and heart rate. The SpinScan Pedal Stroke Analyzer, another exclusive performance feature, will identify dead spots in your pedal stroke. Using this tool can help you maximize power distribution and increase efficiency to become a stronger cyclist. Another great benefit of the CompuTrainer is the software that allows you to “feel” the course of many different triathlons. I can ride the entire Ironman St. George course, with the load generator changing resistance at every hill, while watching my stats – all in the comfort of my own family room. I also like to do interval workouts on the CompuTrianer, attempting to maintain a certain amount of watts for a certain period of time, then recovering. Those intervals would be hard to do outdoors while dodging traffic. Winter will definitely not be the only time I use this great system.
